► Scottish Universities Take Revenue on Home Turf

6th September 2007 9:28 pm

St AndrewsThe men’s event, consisting of 8 player teams followed a morning foursomes and an afternoon singles format. On day 1 Scottish Universities faced their Welsh counterparts and Northern Irish Universities played England. Scotland started the event well winning the foursomes 3-1 including a 7 & 6 win by Gavin Dear and Scott Borrowman, who have recently returned from the Golf Championships at the World University Games, Bangkok. The afternoons play saw Scotland complete a comprehensive win 8-4. In the other match England started the defence of their title well, with a 7.5-4.5 victory over Northern Ireland.
In the Women’s event, a strong England team featuring 3 internationals swept the board on the 1st days play with some magnificent golf winning 4-0 in the singles over Scotland. Day 2 saw English women continued their dominance winning all foursomes matches and only coming in all square in one singles match. The England team led by Chloe Rogers, a dual international in golf and hockey retained their title by the end of the second day with a score of 11.5-0.5 after the two days.
Fairmont St AndrewsScotland Men remained in control with a strong win over their Northern Irish opponents. The Irish started the day well with two halves against their more fancied rivals in the foursomes but in increasingly strong winds Scotland showed their strength in the afternoon singles taking a clean sweep 8-0 for an overall score 11-1.
The other match showed a glimpse of future year’s competitiveness in the Home Internationals. The Welsh Men’s team seriously challenged the defending champions England in both the foursomes and singles. The Welsh team have recently been strengthened by 1st year students Jonathan and Richard Williams. The brothers from UWIC have proved a fearless duo by winning all singles and foursome matches against the two strongest teams in the competition England and Scotland. England was the eventual winners taking the match 7-5.
