1st October 2007 3:45 pm
12 Teams from all over Europe traveled to the competition and played their pool games at 4 different Rugby Clubs around the city. The quarters, semis and Final were played at the Lesdigiueres Stadium, the home of Grenoble Rugby and FC Grenoble clubs.
UWIC were hosted at the Fontaine Rigby Club, and had Montpellier (France) and Hambourg (Germany) in their pool.
The first match was against Montpellier which UWIC won 17 – 7, with tries being scored by Alan Awcock, Jonny Wehbe and Matt McLean, with Matt McLean adding a conversion.
The second match against Hambourg was a more physical game, with the big German players playing more of a 15 a side game. UWIC won this by 39 – 0, with tries from Matt Trowbridge (2), Rhys Crane (2), Jonny Wehbe, Guy Thompson and Mike Barber with Matt McLean adding 2 conversions.

This put UWIC into the quarter Finals along with Montpellier from the pool.
The quarter finals were held at the Lesdigiueres Stadium, where UWIC face Padova (Italy). The games were getting tougher, but UWIC won 31 – 5. Tries were scored by Matt Trowbridge (2), Dan Fox, Luke Dyckhoff and Matt McLean, with Matt McLean adding 3 conversions.
The semi-final was up against the local Grenoble team, one that really bore no resemblance to that having played in the previous rounds?? However, after being 0 – 0 at half time, UWIV overcame the more mature and physical Grenoble side to win 22 – 0. Tries were scored by Guy Thompson (2), Jonny Wehbe and Dan Fox with Matt McLean adding a conversion. Unfortunately Rhys Crane picked up a dead leg during the match and had to leave the field and could not take part in the final.
This saw UWIC through to the final where they met the other British team, Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie. A strong Leeds Met boasted 4 Leeds Tykes players and 3 Academy players and 1 Rugby League player in their team. UWIC started of convincingly quickly scoring tries through Guy Thompson, Matt McLean, Dan Fox and Luke Dyckhoff to reach half-time 20 – 0 up. Things quickly changed after half time, and Leeds managed to score 4 tries and convert 3 putting them into a 20 – 26 point lead with just over a minute to go. Some strong tackling saw the ball being released to Matt McLean who outraced the Leeds players to score under the posts. Matt converted and so UWIC were in front 27 – 26.
Everybody thought that was the end of the game, but the German Referee Kirsten Ljungdahl decided there was still time. Jonny Wehbe received the ball and kicked it into touch thinking the game would end, but no, more agony as the referee awarded the line-out. From this, Alan Awcock found himself with the ball near the UWIC 22 and away he went to score under the posts, with the rest of the players watching. Matt McLean added the conversion to make the score 34 – 26. A well deserved victory, but made hard by a very spirited and committed Leeds Met side.
